Govt appoints ambassador Djoko to speak with FIFA

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

Indonesian government has appointed Indonesian Ambassador to Switzerland Djoko Susilo to communicate with the world's governing body for football, FIFA, over problems shrouding the election of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman.

Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Andi Mallarangeng said the government had appointed the ambassador considering his proximity with the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

“We've called the ambassador and sent documents to clarify the matter with FIFA,” Andi said as quoted by Antara.

Andi added that should FIFA require him or the National Sports Committee/Indonesian Olympic Committee to speak with them directly, he could do so.

“We are ready to expound over the issue if FIFA wants that either in Jakarta or Switzerland,” Andi said.

The PSSI plan to hold quadrennial congress to elect a new chairman has been in limbo following the forced delay to the meeting slated to be held in Bali on March 26, since at this stage no candidate will run for election.

Incumbent PSSI president Nurdin Halid and deputy chairman Nirwan D. Bakrie lost their status as candidates after the appeal committee annulled all rulings made by PSSI's election verification team.

Previously, the verification team had sidelined two candidates, Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Toisutta and oil tycoon Arifin Panigoro, and gave the go ahead to Nurdin and Nirwan.

George and Arifin later filed an appeal against the ruling.

Appeal committee chairman Tjipta Lesmana said earlier that his committee had decided to annul all rulings made by the verification team amid the government’s intervention.

However, the government says it did not interfere in the election of the PSSI chairman.
