Metro TV & Media Indonesia Demand Dipo Alam Apology

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

Metro TV and Media Indonesia newspaper have demanded that Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam formally apologized for his statement that the two media outlets are biased against the government in their coverage.

Both organizations belong to the Media Group, which is owned by former Golkar politician and chairman of the National Democrats, Surya Paloh.

Media Group's demand for an apology was announced on Wednesday by media lawyer O.C. Kaligis.

Earlier on Wednesday during a hearing with the House Commission to discuss the Presidential Unit for Development, Supervision and Oversight (UKP4), Dipo Alam said he would never apologize for his statement on boycotting biased media outlets.

"Dipo Alam is Dipo Alam," he said in English. "I will never apologize."

He said he was not remotely sorry for his statements because he believed that in a democratic country the press should be controlled by the people, to which he is part of.

"I [will] never change," he said. "I step on this case with all its risks because we cannot let the press become an institution that can do no wrong."

He said that he was familiar with the country's media law, which states the press has the responsibility to respect human rights and should be controlled by the people.

Dipo came under heavy criticism at Wednesday's hearing for his comments on the media. Lawmakers in the House Commission II, which oversees home affairs, accused him of overstepping the boundaries.

Dipo said he was not opposed to criticism, but rather he opposed media that discredited the government. He said stories that were critical of the government had scared off foreign investors.

Nurul Arifin from the Golkar Party called Dipo the "newsmaker of the month." She said she regretted his statements because she believed the media was the fourth pillar of democracy. She said lawmakers in the House of Representatives faced criticism from the media, but she and her colleagues used the evaluations to improve their performances.

"What you did was very unusual for any government institution to do," she said. "[You] must be thankful for having critical media."

Hermanto from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) said Diplo's statement had serious implications. "The implication is very wide to our media industry and our political situation," he said.
