Second Group of Indonesian Evacuees Expected to Arrive

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

The second group of Indonesia’s evacuees from Egypt were expected to arrive here Friday noon, said Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa.

"Today at 12.30 noon the second group will be arriving in this country," Minister Marty said after meeting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the presidential office here, Friday.

The foreign affairs ministry and related institutions would monitor and provide their needs while in Jakarta before being sent to their respective hometowns.

Around 400 more Indonesian citizens in Egypt have confirmed that they wanted to return to Indonesia. They would be evacuated from Egypt in the next flight, the minister said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Task Force for Evacuation of Indonesian Citizens Hassan Wirajuda after the meeting with the head of state, said the second group of evacuees would arrive at Soekarno-Hatta international airport by Boeing 747 owned by Garuda Indonesia.

Before proceeding to their hometowns, the evacuees are temporarily accommodated at Pondok Gede Haj Dormitory, East Jakarta, the former foreign affairs minister said. The second group of evacuees will leave Cairo on Saturday.

Some 415 Indonesian evacuees arrived at Soekarno-Hatta international airport on Wednesday, as the first fleet of thousands of Indonesians to be evacuated from riot-hit Egypt. The government had sent a special Garuda Indonesia flight (Boeing 747-400) to take them out of Egypt on Tuesday evening (Feb. 1) at around 10 pm Cairo time.

The decision to evacuate Indonesian citizens from Egypt was made in a cabinet meeting led by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday following the worsening of political and social unrest in Egypt where demonstrators demanded that President Hosni Mubarak step down.

According to data from Foreign Affairs Ministry there are 6,149 Indonesians living in Egypt consisting of 4,297 students and 1,002 workers, as well as Indonesian Embassy staff and their families.
