Today, one year ago, massive earthquake at 7.6 on the Richter scale stroke Padang, the capital of West Sumatra. Earlier this morning, another earthquake also hit Kaimana, West Papua, at 7.4 on the Richter Scale.

The current Papua tremor indicates a movement from Eastern Indonesia to Java and Sumatra.

According to a presidential adviser on disaster and social issues Andi Arief, the tremor movements deep down in the ground may affect several areas in Java which include Ujung Kulon, Tasikmalaya, and Jakarta.

"If future earthquakes would take place in Ujung Kulon and Tasikmalaya, Jakarta would be seriously affected," Andi Arief told VIVAnews today, Sept 30.

The first signal of tremor spreading to Java was apparent as Aru Islands in Maluku was hit by an earthquake at 7.1 on the Richter scale on September 26, 2010. The movement became clearer as Baubau, Southeast Sulawesi, was struck by a tremor at 5.2 on the Richter scale and Banda Sea, Aceh, was hit by one at 5.2 on the Richter scale.

In addition, another large tremor occurred on September 29 at 6.8 on the Richter scale in the depth of 257 kilometers. The treamor spreading to Java was also evident as Andaman Islands were hit by earthquake two days ago.

"We're expecting a tremor along Sumatra and Java. I hope it won't be too large at scale," said Andi.

Two areas in Sumatra that have the potency to be affected would be Bengkulu and Mentawai.

It is predicted that Mentawai would be subject to earthquake of 8.1 on the Richter scale in no time. "We never know when it's going to happen," said Andi.

"Researches are now focusing on Sumatra and Lembang faults," said Andi.
