State Secretary denies presidential clothing allowance report

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

State Secretary Sudi Silalahi denied on Monday a recent report by a budget watchdog that stated President Susilio Bambang Yudhoyono had been allocated Rp 839 million (US$93,900) from this year's state budget for spending on his wardrobe.

Sudi said the budget was allocated for the entire presidential Cabinet, and not just for the President.

However, Sudi added, the President, the Vice President and himself had not used the allocated money for their own clothing.

“Ministers use the money from the budget because it is their right. It has been officially budgeted,” he said as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.

Last week, the Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (FITRA) reported that the President had received Rp 839 million from the 2010 state budget to buy new outfits and that Rp 42 billion had been budgeted for the purchase and restoration of furniture at the State Palace.

The report came only a few days after FITRA announced that the Presidential Cabinet spent more state funds on overseas working trips than any other state institution.
