A man carrying a bomb that exploded in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, was allegedly targeting a traffic police officer who was on duty near the blast site.

The explosion took place on Thursday morning at a bus stop in Jl. Raya Kalimalang, near Sumber Arta market, few meters from the border with Bekasi, West Java.

A police officer at the location said the man was walking carrying, not riding, a bicycle and was heading west. When the man was directly behind the police officer, a bag attached to the bicycle went off, the officer said.

Sources in the police confirmed the police officer was Adj. Comr. Heri, the head of the Bekasi Police traffic law enforcement unit. Heri was reportedly uninjured but the man was severely wounded.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said the man, aged around 30, was injured in the face and neck. "His right hand and right leg are also broken," he said.

The injured man was rushed to Kramat Jati Hospital for medical treatment.

Witnesses said the police impounded the bicycle and the bag, as well as collecting hundreds of small nails, a rice pan and plastic water bottles.

The scene of the explosion was covered with a white powder and several small nails.
