Jihad Message behind Bomb Blast in Indonesia

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

An Islamic extremist carrying a homemade bomb on a bicycle was badly injured Thursday when the device exploded near a police post and market on the Jakarta outskirts, police said.

The blast occurred meters from traffic police officers but no one other than the suspected bomber was injured, police said, indicating the bomb might not have exploded as intended.

The device was packed with nails and the man was carrying a note saying he was seeking revenge on the police for the killing and arrests of Islamic militants.

“It's a jihad message,“ Jakarta police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said.

The device was encased in a plastic pipe and contained carbide, commonly used in explosives, as well as “long nails,“ police said.

Two local news websites said the note read, “This is revenge against you, the allies of Satan, for killing and sentencing mujahedeen to death. We are ready to die for this noble religion“.

The unidentified 38-year-old man was taken to the hospital with wounds to the face and neck, as well as a broken arm and leg, police said. Suspected Islamist militants killed three Indonesian police officers last week on Sumatra island in the latest sign homegrown extremists are shifting tactics from slaying foreigners to targeting the security forces.

Police have killed or arrested scores of suspected terrorists since the mainly Muslim country suffered its last major attack--twin suicide blasts at luxury hotels in July last year which killed seven people.

The alleged mastermind of that and other attacks, Noordin Mohammed Top, and several of his accomplices were killed by police last year. Others were arrested and tried on terror-related charges.

In March police shot dead Dulmatin, a key figure in the Jemaah Islamiyah regional terror network who allegedly played a major role in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly Western tourists. Antiterror police shot dead three suspects and arrested 15 others in a series of raids Sept. 19.

Police said raids on Sumatra island targeted Islamist militants linked to Jemaah Islamiyah and unidentified foreign groups, which were plotting attacks in the archipelago.
