Actor, athlete and Democratic Party lawmaker Raden Panji Chandra Pratomo Samiaji Massaid, popularly known as Adjie Massaid, died of a sudden heart attack early Saturday morning at Fatmawati Hospital in Jakarta. He was 43.

Considered one of the young stars of the ruling Democratic Party, Adjie was rushed to the hospital at 10 p.m., shortly after returning home from playing futsal. He told his wife, former Miss Indonesia Angelina Sondakh, also a Democrat lawmaker, that he felt pain in his chest. He died at 2.30 a.m.

“We are all shocked and saddened by the news,” said Ayob, a member of Angelina's staff, according to Antara. “He loves sports. We never thought that he would die like this.”

Democratic Party official, Saan Mustofa, told reporters that Adjie died of a heart attack.

The two-term legislator was elected to the House in 2004 and reelected in 2009. His movie star looks and popularity made him a rising figure in the party. He was also the manager of the country's Under-23 football squad.

His death sparked an outpouring of emotion on Twitter and other social media sites. "RIP Adjie Massaid. Such shocking news," wrote @Ninazatulina, as his passing became the No. 1 trending topic in Indonesia.

Born in Jakarta on Aug. 7, 1967, Adjie moved to the Netherlands with his family in 1975. He was a member of the Ajax Amsterdam Football Club before returning home to Indonesia in the late 1980s. He rose to popularity after starring in an award-winning movie, "Cinta Dalam Sepotong Roti” (“Love in A Piece of Bread”), directed by noted filmmaker Garin Nugroho.

His marriage to singer Reza Artamevia, with whom he had two daughters, ended in divorce in 2005. Four years later Adjie married his party colleague Angelina Sondakh and had a son, Keanu.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono were scheduled to visit the family home in Cilandak for viewing.

The body will be taken to the House of Representatives building for an official funeral service at 10 a.m. and will be buried at Jeruk Purut cemetery in South Jakarta at noon.
