The opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) is exploring the possibility of coalescing with the ruling Democrat Party (PD) in the face of the 2014 general elections, its chief patron Taufiq Kiemas said."We are exploring the possibility of a coalition and discussing presidential and vice presidential pair issues," Taufik Kiemas said at the Parliament building here on Monday.
He said talks on presidential and vice presidential candidates were still limited to ideas only. The talks were on seeking a common platform, without touching on the likely presidential and vice presidential figures.
PDIP has not yet decided any figures as presidential and vice presidential candidates for the 2014 elections. "Regarding the figures, you may ask about it to the Central Executive Board of PDIP," he said.
He stated that there was no need for a PDIP cadre to sit in a ministerial post in the cabinet as it could lead to transactional practices.
"If a PDIP cadre is offered with a ministerial post with a political contract, it means that a transactional deal is involved," he said.
Taufik Kiemas who is also chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), said that the possible coalition between PDIP and PD would be in the form of cooperation in developing the nation and state. "PDIP is of the view that in developing the state and nation, it does not talk about whether a political party is within or outside the government but whether or not it shares the same commitment," he said.
He stated that PDIP continued to build its spirit in developing political communications with the Democrat Party, and the matter had been discussed down to the party cadres’ level.
"I think the party cadres have all known it so that there was no protest," Kiemas said. He added that the year 2011 was a time for the party to develop political communications with other political parties in the face of the 2014 general elections.
