JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

Presidential adviser on social and disaster issues, Andi Arief, predicted that the earthquake that hit Andaman Islands, Nicobar, India, may trigger similar tremor to Sumatra.

"A study conducted in the last 10 years shows that the Nicobar earthquake has large potentials of affecting Sumatra," said Andi, yesterday.

He cited the last event occurred yesterday, Oct 17, at 2.51 a.m. Nicobar was hit by an earthquake at 5.8 on the Richter scale.

After the occurrence, the research team continued observing the tremor's impact. In fact, at 1.20 p.m, the after-effect of the Nicobar tremor hit Nias at 4.5 on the Richter scale.

Responding to the prediction, Chief of Earthquake Information Dept. at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Rahmat Triyono, stated that the people of Sumatra should remain calm.

"As we all know, the earth's plates are unstable. They've been in motion since tens of millions of years ago," said Triyono. "The movement is measured at seven centimeters per year," he said.
