Police spokesman blames Jakarta’s violent crimes on lack of faith

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

Jakarta Police spokesman, Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar, said the lack of religious faith was the main cause of Jakarta’s violent crimes, including street fighting, which has been on the increase.

“I disagree when people said that the main cause of crime was poverty. In my opinion, the main cause is poverty of faith,” he said Wednesday, during an interactive dialogue entitled: “Safeguarding the capital city and drug dealing prevention,” held by the Jakarta Communication and Information Agency.

He appealed to parents to actively promote positive family values in order to prevent family members from becoming involved in crimes or drugs.

“Parents should set the example by strengthening their faith and increasing their religious activities,” he added.

He said that since 2010, the overall crime rate in Jakarta had decreased but the severity of the crimes committed had risen. Criminals do not hesitate to use violence, to torture, or even to kill.

Responding to the outbreaks of fighting in Johar Baru, Central Jakarta and Pasar Rumput, South Jakarta, Baharudin said that local officials should study the roots of the problem in order to stop the brawls from recurring.

University of Indonesia criminologist, Josia Simon, said that there are two primary causes of physical violence in civil society: firstly, sociopsychological conditions and, secondly, situational conditions.

Josia said in social psychological conditions, people have lower tolerance levels, while in situational conditions, people feel forced into becoming violent in order to defend themselves.
