TNI Launches Sea Combat Operations

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

The Indonesian military (TNI) launched on Friday sea combat standby operations code-named "Arung Pari-11" to anticipate and deal with a wide range of illegal activities in the sea and threats to the country’s maritime sovereignty.

The six-month long operations launched at Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta involve five warships, an Indonesian Navy Bolkow helicopter, an elite amphibian force command team, a marine amphibian spy team, a medical team, and two repair teams.

Maj. Gen. Hambali Hanafiah, assistant for operations to the Indonesian military chief, said in a ceremony marking the launch of the operations that the activity was part of tasks related to military operations for war (OMP) carried out by the Indonesian western fleet command to maintain the state sovereignty and uphold the law in the sea.

"The six-month long operations will focus on all parts of the western Indonesia, particularly strategic and vulnerable areas as part of efforts to anticipate various possible threats as well as to give deterrence effect," he said.

As a maritime state which lies between two continents and two oceans, Indonesia was highly vulnerable to violations of its maritime sovereignty.

"The violations include border conflict, territorial violation, terrorism, sea robbery, illegal fishing, illegal trafficking, and other illegal activities," he said.

Therefore, he added, the operations which involved the elements of the Indonesian Navy served as a noble task which had strategic meaning to preserve the state interests and sovereignty.
