A 16-year-old girl in Tangerang died on on Wednesday morning, sparking allegations of hazing from her parents against the high school where the freshman was undergoing student orientation, Metro TV reported.Amanda Putri Lubis, a first-year student at SMA Negeri 9 in South Tangerang, had completed her second day of orientation when she began having difficulty breathing. She was rushed to a hospital, where she later died.
Amanda's family said their daughter had told them of being hazed during the two days of orientation. They said she described being forced to carry sacks of water, bamboo, potted plants and stacks of newspapers, all while wearing a heavy sweatsuit and a funnel on her head.
On the second day, she became terrified when she realized she had not brought her student name tag, her brother Evan told Kompas.com.
"My father asked, 'is there a punishment for it?' and she said yes," Evan said. "My sister had refused to go to school and was on the verge of tears. She finally agreed to go [to school] and I went home to take her her name tag."
When he returned to school to deliver the name tag, Evan said, he was not allowed to see his sister. He gave the name tag to a senior student who supervised the orientation and said he saw Amanda standing apart from the other students in the school yard.
Wawan Prasetyo, a teacher at the high school who is also the head of the orientation period committee, denied any hazing took place during orientation.
“During orientation period, we instruct senior students not to haze the freshmen,” Wawan told the Jakarta Globe. “The activities during orientation are educational, such as providing academic information to the new students. Hazing or physical violence is strictly forbidden.”
The family has said they will not press any charges against the school, but they are seeking an explanation of what happened during the orientation period.
