Commuter Line confuses train passengers

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

State railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) began a trial adjustment to its Commuter Line system, which did away with the express-or-air-conditioned economy class system on Saturday, much to the bewilderment of some passengers.

Kompas.com reported that passengers at the University of Indonesia train station began questioning the Commuter Line system on Saturday morning, despite a week of efforts to disseminate information with posters in each station in Greater Jakarta.

“There are no schedules for the AC economy trains or express trains and the price has increased to Rp 9,000 (US$1.05). All trains stop at each station,” the officer announced.

Lutfi, another officer, explained to passengers that the single tariff applied to Commuter Line trains and that the trial would only last for one day.

“The plan is [to hold the trial] every Saturday,” Lutfi said, adding that as of July 2, all trains in Greater Jakarta would run according to the commuter line system.

Kompas.com also reported that most of the Commuter Line trains were uncrowded and generally about five to ten minutes behind schedule, which calls for trains to arrive every four to 15 minutes.

The Commuter Line system is intended to increase passenger capacity. Trains have currently only been able to carry around 400,000 passengers a day. However, some passengers are not in favor of paying more for what they deem inadequate service.
