530 Tons of Tuna Exported from Indonesia to US, Japan

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

West Sumatra has since early this year exported 530 tons of fresh and processed tuna to the United States and Japan. The exports consisted of 360 tons of fresh tuna and 170 tons of processed tuna, Head of the West Sumatra Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Office Yosmeri said here on Thursday.

Tuna is West Sumatra’s new export commodity after the province has been declared as a hub for tuna in the western parts of Indonesia. West Sumatra has set itself the target of exporting 1,000 tons of fresh and processed tuna next year.

He said the office had provided new and traditional fishermen with various skills on how to catch tuna properly to produce tuna of high quality. West Sumatra’s tuna production almost doubled to 780 tons last year from 391 tons the year before thanks to transfer of skills to new and traditional fishermen.

"We are optimistic that our tuna production will reach 1,000 tons in 2011, the more so because West Sumatra will receive two tuna fishing ships from the central government," he said.

Almost 70 percent of the province’s tuna production goes to the United States, Japan and the European Union, 22 percent to Southeast Asia and East Asia and the remaining 8 percent to the Middle East and Africa.
