Susno Arrested After 'Almost 10 Incidents'

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

Police have indicated that it was not a single incident that had led to the detention of Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji, the National Police’s former chief detective, but rather a series of indiscretions that have tested their collective patience.

Susno, who has continued to make a series of explosive revelations of corruption and collusion within the badly tainted police force, was seized at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on his way to Singapore, allegedly because he had not secured the permission of National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri to leave the country.

He was later released and is today believed to be at his residence in Depok on the outskirts of Jakarta.

Insp. Gen. Edward Aritonang, a spokesman for the National Police, said Susno had violated government regulations governing ethical and discipline standards at the National Police.

Besides, attempting to leave the country without permission, Edward said Susno had repeatedly violated the code of conduct.

“He did it almost 10 times,” Edward told the press on Monday night.

He said it began when Susno made a surprise appearance for the defense at the murder trial of the former chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Antasari Azhar, “and continued by holding press conferences, skipping work and so forth.”

Benny K Harman, chairman of House of Representatives Commission III, which overseas legal affairs, told the Jakarta Globe that Susno should not have been arrested for a mere disciplinary offense, saying “it somehow gives he impression that the arrests was ... a way for top police officers to silence Susno so he can’t give more evidence on case brokers.”

Trust in the already battered National Police has hit a new low following Susno’s allegations, that have implicated a number of senior officers in alleged corruption and brokering criminal or tax cases.

Meanwhile, an advisor to Bambang said police had detained and questioned Susno by the book, despite the three-star general’s protests against his treatment.

“If Susno Duadji went to another country, it could possibly disturb the ongoing investigation process of a number of cases,” Kastorius Sinaga told Kompas.com. “What if he were abducted by criminals while he’s in other country? It could be a new national problem.”(thejakartaglobe)
