Religious tensions between a group of christians and local comnuity in Bekasi, in the eastern outskirt of Jakarta has moved to a higher level today (12/9) since it was started about two months ago as a member of the Batak Protestant Church Congregation (HKBP) was stabbed this morning.

A 50 year old member of the church was attacked with sharp weapons and sustained open wound on the right side of his stomach while walking to an open field where the congregation usually holds sunday services.

Head of the congregation priest Luspida Simanjuntak was injured on her head in the attack which she said was launched by eight men on motorcycles.

The open field has been the source of conflict between the congregation and local community as it is insisting on building a church on the land, despite rejection from locals.

Government regulation on religious facilities issued by the Home Affairs Ministry and The Religious Affairs Ministry in 2006 stipulates that a new religious facility should be endorsed by at least 60 members of the community where a planned project is located.

Bekasi Metropolitan Police Chief Senior Commissioner Imam Sugianto claimed of having an evidence of the attack and search is ongoing for the perpetrator, while priest Luspida said that the attacker that wounded her church member was regularly seen in numerous protest against the plan.
