After four days of fit and proper tests, Commission III finally appoints six names which will be recommended to the president as justices. The six judges, two from non traditional carreer path and four from career path, were elected after one round. The commission has eliminated the 14 other candidates. The selection was done by Commission III's 55 members, Thursday evening. The selection commenced at 8.15 pm by voting. Each member of the House selected six names.
The six chosen judges are: Suryajaya (ad hoc judge for the Jakarta High Court) with 42 votes, Salman Luthan (teaching staff from the Indonesian Islamic University's Faculty of Law) with 55 votes, Supandi (career-path judge currently the chief of the Supreme Court Education and Training Center) with 45 votes, Achmad Yamanie (deputy chief of the Banjarmasin High Court) with 39 votes, Soltony Mohdally (chief of PT Banjarmasin) with 53 votes, and Yulius (a judge at the Jakarta State Administrative Court) with 50 votes. Salman Luthan won the unanimous votes of Commission III.
Chief of Commission III, Benny K. Harman, explained that his considerations were a mix of judicial technical skills and mastery of the jurisprudence. According to him, the candidates from the career path have sufficient judicial technical skills but are rather unaware of the development of the jurisprudence; while the non-career path candidates are up to date with jurisprudence but sometimes are too theoretical and they have trouble with technical matters.
According to the member of the Judicial Commission, Soekotjo Soeparto, the six elected candidates had the highest rankings.(KOMPAS.com)
