Throwing Blames among BI Officials

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

The inquiry committee formed by the House of Rep., investigating the Century Bank case and Bank Indonesia (BI) officials, has reached its fourth stage. After the investigation between 22-23 December 2009 and on January 4, 2010, on seven high-ranking BI officials, now the committee calls five other key figures from BI: former BI deputy governor Maman H. Somantri, former director of bank monitoring Rusli Simanjuntak, former BI deputy governor Maulana Ibrahim, BI deputy governor Budi Mulya, and former director of bank monitoring Zainal Abidin.

The focus of the investigation is still regarding the merger and disbursement of short term liquidity support (FPJP) for Century Bank. The investigation, Wednesday, will confirm a number of discrepancies discovered by the inquiry committee's previous investigations.

Former BI governor Burhanuddin Abdullah, former senior BI deputy governor Anwar Nasution, former deputy governor Miranda Goeltom (now senior BI deputy governor), former BI governor Boediono, former BI deputy governor Budi Mulya, and former BI deputy governor Aulia Pohan, all of whom were members of the BI board of governors, all indicate that as the top management they only approved the matter at the final stage, both for the merger and the granting of FPJP. Regarding the details of the requirements for merger and FPJP, they all seemed to agree to say that the director for bank monitoring as their subordinate should know more.

This attitude of 'ponting fingers' has been duly noted by the inquiry committee as the opening in finding the missing link. Meanwhile, Burhanuddin firmly stated that he never gave any disposition regarding the merger of Bank CIC, Bank Pikko, and Bank Danpac into Century Bank. Therefore, Burhanuddin, who is still sentenced for the YPPI fund dispersement, denies the minutes of meeting from July 2004 that stated his consent for the merger.

Meanwhile, during the inspection on former BI director of bank monitoring Sabar Anton Tarihoran yesterday, it was revealed that there was a 'typo incident' on the minutes of meeting of the July 2004 Board of governors' meeting. Sabar denies of tampering the minutes of meeting. He thinks that it was just a typo.

The minutes of meeting mentioned "BI governor" when it should've been "BI deputy governor", which would refer to Maulana Ibrahim. Sabar also denies of being responsible for permitting the merger, and he allows this to be confirmed with the head of governance, licensing, and information bureau.

Deputy chief of the inquiry committee Gayus Lumbuun previously said this was a case of shifting responsibilities onto each other. The typo incident also reflects the disorderliness in the work of BI's current management, especially in monitoring. "This shows that BI isn't prudent in checking and re-checking its supervision."

The inquiry committee's investigation, Wednesday, started at 10 am, and was done on a panel of three parties at the same time, who were: Rusli Simanjuntak, Maulana Ibrahim and Maman H. Soemantri. This afternoon, the investigation shift its attention to Budi Mulya and Zainal Abidin. (kompas)
