Thousands of facebookers rally for KPK deputy chiefs

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

Thousands of Facebook users joined an anti-corruption rally at Jakarta's Hotel Indonesia traffic circle on Sunday morning.

The heat at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle did not prevent the facebookers to join the rally that aimed to give supports for Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) suspended deputy chiefs Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto.

The police have named Chandra and Bibit suspects in a bribery case, with weak evidence, and therefore the public sees the police's move as the criminalization of the KPK.

As of Sunday morning, the number of facebook users to support Chandra and Bibit had swelled over 1 million people.

One of the facebook users, Ratno, 24, told Kompas.com at the rally site that the police had never been serious in fighting against corruption. What the police did was even to criminalize Chandra and Bibit.

"Why the police move against Pak Chandra and Pak Bibit. What deserve heavy legal penalty is Anggodo," Ratno said, referring to Anggodo Widjojo, whose damning telephone conversation with a number of police officers and state prosecutors was played at the Constitutional Court on Tuesday.

The rally organizer also prepared a stage for anti-graft activists to air their statement before the demonstrators. The stage was named "Indonesia Sehat Melawan Korupsi" (Indonesia's healthy to combat corruption).
"Let the people of Indonesia unite to face corruption. No more court mafia in this country. Let's crush the corruptors," said artist Indra Bekti from the stage.(The Jakarta Post)
