Anticipating Heavy Traffic during Antigraft Day If Urgent, Indonesian Police Redirect Traffic

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

The police plan to redirect the traffic in some areas in Jakarta if the mass demonstration held during the world Antigraft Day stops moving vehicles, Wednesday. The police estimate 15,000 demonstrators from various organizations will pour into six locations.

"We've prepared alternative routes for redirection. But it's not a priority for now," said Jakarta Police spokesman, Police Great Comr. Boy Rafli Amar, when contacted by Kompas.com, Tuesday night.

Boy explained that this morning till noon when the demonstrations are underway, five demonstration areas, - which are the Hotel Indonesia circle, State Palace, Bank Indonesia, House of Rep. building, and Corruption Eradication Commission building, won't be redirected. But if the masses spill to all lanes then the authority will redirect the traffic with the help of 4,000 officers.

"We will see the situation. If the masses are overwhelming and are slowing the moving vehicles, then we will redirect the traffic. But if the streets are still passable we'll try to manage the traffic."

According to him the police suggest motorists to avoid those areas if possible, especially from noon till late afternoon to avoid major traffic jam. "But if you really must go there, then it's fine. We'll try to help manage the traffic."

As for the demonstrators, Boy expects them to use the Antigraft Day for peaceful acts. They should avoid provocations that would lead to riots. "Don't bring molotovs, sharp weapons, or other things that might endanger others. Don't burn used tires."(KOMPAS.com)
