20,000 Demonstrators Pour into Streets for Antigraft Day

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's concern for mass clashes during the world Antigraft Day, Wednesday, might have cancelled the celebration agenda from the Corruption Eradication Commission, District Attorney's Office, Police, and a number of state-owned enterprises. But that doesn't apply for antigraft NGOs.

The Civilian People's Antigraft Coalition (KOMPAK) that consists of a number of NGO figures claims that it's ready to mobilize its mass to celebrate the world Antigraft Day. 20,000 people are planned to join the act.

"The participants are from Muhammadiyah youth, civilian people, Kontras NGO and UPC and many others deliberately involved in the world Antigraft Day. Until yesterday we estimate 20,000 people," said Usman Hamid, one of the collective coordinators of KOMPAK.

Usman stated that actually his organization wishes for a bigger mass. But, due to the president's repeated statements of concern the act had weakened for a while.

To anticipate that his organization has asked all leaders and public organizations to ensure that the participants won't bring sharp weapons nor resort to violence. If the situation encountered a problem then the mass could be pulled back.

Regarding the permit, his organization has coordinated with the authorities since last week, namely the National Police, and especially the Provincial Police and the National Police Security Bureau.

"We ask that no rival mass be mobilized or even if there is some that can't be prevented then we hope the police will be able to separate the masses, between the rival masses and those celebrating the antigraft day."

Usman mentioned that the president's accusation was because of some information of a meeting by a number of figures to topple his position. However, that information is false.

"I also received the flyer or minutes of meeting which was the president's reference regarding the attempts to coup him. I see that it's false. The implicated political figures also deny it."

The figures allegedly involved, among which were Buya Syafii Maarif, Yudi Latif, and Fadjroel Rahman, according to Usman are just impossible to topple the president. They met only for the strategy to push antigraft in the short-term, to celebrate the world Antigraft Day, the return of Bibit and Chandra, and also to discuss eradicating court mafia in law enforcement institutions.

So, according to him, the president's reference is inaccurate. However, there was something odd about the minutes of meeting circulated at the Darmawangsa Hotel meeting because it was stamped as "Confidential" or "Secret".

As far as he knew after 12 years of joining a public organization, there has never been a secret meeting with a minutes of meeting.

Just let it be

Meanwhile, Fajroel Rahman said that for the Wednesday act there would be 2,000 police personnel on duty.

"We also suggest our friends who will be involved tomorrow not to be incited by provocations. Just let it be."

According to Fajroel, the act will be simple, from the National Monument to the Hotel Indonesia circle. There will be prayers from six religions, the singing of "Indonesia Raya" (national anthem) by Edo Kondologit, and "Indonesia Pusaka" by Frankie Sahilatua.

He stated that the world Antigraft Day celebration will be held in 33 provinces and 400 regencies and cities. This is the momentum to increase awareness to fight corruption in Indonesia.(KOMPAS.com)
