West Sumatra earthquake`s death toll reaches 215

The provisional death toll of the magnitude-7.9 earthquake which hit West Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 30) has reached 215.

The fatalities were 139 in Padang City, 62 in Padang Pariaman, and 14 in Pariaman town, data of the West Sumatra Governor office`s disaster mitigation post command, on Thursday at 11 am local time.

However, based on information collected by ANTARA News, thousands of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings such as in Mara Palam Padang, Adira Finance Sawahan padang, a number of shops in Sawahan area in Padang City, Nurul Iman Mosque, Sari dispensary and Gama Training Course Building.

Seven sub districts, namely Padang Sago, Sungai Geringging, Aurmalintang, Kampung Dalam, Ulakan, 2x12 Enam Lingkung, and Tapakis, in Padang Pariaman District, were badly affected by the powerful temblors, according to Padang Pariaman District Head Muslim Kasim.

"Now the sub districts are isolated because the roads to the areas have been cut off," Muslim Kasim said.

He hoped that relief aid, especially food, could be sent to the quake-affected sub districts by helicopters soon.

West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi reported to visiting Home Affairs Minister Mardianto, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris, and Transportation Ministry Jusman Syafii Jamal, that the earthquake also severely affected the districts of Pessel, Pasaman Barat, Agam, Solok, and Kota Solok.

Reports on casualties and damages in the districts are not yet available as roads and telecommunication lines have been cut off due to the earthquake.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophyics Agency the epicenter of the quake was located 0.84 degrees southern latitude and 99.65 degrees northern longitude, around 57 kilometers northwest of Pariaman district, West Sumatra, at a depth of 71 kilometers.

It was about 78 km northwest of Padang, 99 km southwest of Bukit Tinggi, 106 km northeast of Mentawai Islands. (ANTARA News)
