Medical aid, logistics dispatched to quake-hit areas

Two Hercules aircraft carrying medical and logistic aid left Halim Perdanakusuma airport here on Thursday morning for Padang, West Sumatra, after the area was hit by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake on Wednesday evening.

Swift reaction team from National Board of Disaster Management (BNPB) and medical team from Health Ministry and MER-C also flew on the two Hercules planes.

The team also bring along 20,000 sets of tent, 10,000 pieces of blanket, medicine, and logistic aids for the victims of Wednesday`s powerful earthquake in West Sumatra.

Health Ministry`s Crisis Management Center (PPK) chief Rustam S Pakaya said he has also sent a medical team and logistic aids along with operational cost of Rp200 million.

Pakaya said the medical team from PPK consisted of 91 personnel with a truck-load of medicine and five tons of food.

"All parties are moving toward the quake-hit areas this morning. We also hired a plane to carry the members of our medical team and other humanitarian aids which Hercules plane cannot carry, because we want the team and aids to arrive at the quake-hit areas as soon as possible," Pakaya said.

He said PPK team from Jakarta, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, and other medical team from Indonesian Red Crescent, National Defense Forces (TNI), and the National Alms Collecting Agency (BAZNAS) have arrived in West Sumatra.

As of Thursday morning, data from the Natural Disaster Mitigation Task Force (Satkorlak) indicated that more than 215 people have been killed and thousands others were estimated to still being trapped in the rubble of collapsed houses and buildings at the districts of Mara Palam, and Sawahan.

Meanwhile, Padang Pariaman District Chief Muslim Kasim stated seven subdistricts in his region had been worst hit by the 7.6 temblor, namely Padang Sago, Sugai Geringging, Aurmalintang, Kampung Dalam, Ulakan, 2x12 Enam Lingkung, and Tapakis.

"The seven areas are still isolated because the access roads have been cut off," Muslim said adding relief aid for quake victims there could only be delivered by air. (ANTARA News)
