Police remain main element in anti-terrorism campaign

JAKARTA LIFE'S STYLE. Police remain the main element in fighting terrorism, despite the establishment of anti-terror desks in the military regional commands throughout Indonesia by the Indonesian Defense Forces, according to a minister.

"It is prioritized by the police," Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said here on Thursday on the sidelines of a meeting with mass media executives, in response to a press question on whether it would be an overlapping in terrorism handling between the police and the Army.

He said the counter terrorism task was later handed over to the attorney general and justice as well police which have formed a triumvirate in legal enforcement.

However, TNI (Indonesian Defense Forces) would continue to help fight terrorism with its military power. If necessary, the TNI`s power could be used depending on the condition in the field, he said.

He said the efforts to fight terrorism must be conducted by all parties including the civilians, and related institutions in the central government and regions.

On counter terrorism coordination, the coordinating ministry for political, legal and security affairs is currently preparing a counter terrorism plan across institutions.

At present, the coordinating ministry for political, legal and security affairs has a counter terrorism desk.

The police have also communicated with TNI in handling terrorism, according to the defense minister.

Earlier, Chief of Staff of the Army General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo said the Army was ready to fight terrorism, by having counter terrorism desks in every military regional command all over the country.

"We are ready to fight terrorism in line with the authorities of TNI based on the presidential decree in 2005, on TNI`s role in helping the police fight terrorism," he said.

The counter terrorism desks are tasked to collect information and present it to the chief of staff of the army and the TNI commander, for their consideration in handling terrorism.(ANTARA News)
