The reconstruction of houses damaged in the 7.3-magnitude earthquake that rattled West Java last Wednesday will cost an estimated Rp1.5 trillion, a minister said.

The exact amount of the reconstruction funds would be known only after the verification of damage to the houses had been completed, Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said following a limited cabinet meeting at the Bogor Palace on Monday.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono chaired the meeting particularly to discuss post-quake reconstruction efforts.

"The cost will range between Rp1.4 trillion and Rp1.5 trillion," Aburizal said.
He expressed hope the verification could be completed in mid-October 2009 after which the reconstruction of the damaged houses could be started.

The reconstruction cost would be borne by the central, provincial and district governments, he said.

"The president hopes the reconstruction of the damaged houses will apply a co-financing scheme, meaning that the central and regional governments will jointly bear the cost," he said.

He said the reconstruction funds would be taken from reserve funds because natural disaster funds in the 2009 state budget had been used up.

The reconstruction of houses damaged in last Wednesday`s earthquake would have the same scheme as the reconstruction of houses damaged in Yogyakarta earthquake a few years ago, he said.

Under the scheme, the people constructed their damaged houses themselves under the coordination of the regional government, he said.

The Sept 2, 2009 earthquake affected 16 districts in West Java, leaving 73 people dead and more than 600 others injured.

In West Java, 54,171 houses were seriously damaged and 114,601 others were lightly damaged in the earthquake.

The quake also caused major damage to 1,246 houses and light damage to 1,446 houses in Cilacap district, Central Java.
