Former President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid came to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)`s office here Saturday to declare his readiness to vouch for the innocence of two recently arrested KPK deputy chiefs.

"I came to add more support for their release from detention. I am prepared to put my name on the line in this case," Gus Dur said after visiting the KPK office here on Saturday.

Gus Dur`s action for the release of suspended KPK deputy chiefs Bibid Samad Rianto and Chandra Hamzah came after several other national figures had also declared their conviction that the two two KPK leaders` arrest was a mistake.

The former president arrived at the KPK building at 09.40 a.m. and left the place about 1.5 hours later.

Inside the anti graft body`s office, Gus Dur met KPK Vice Chairmen Haryono Ahmad, Mas Ahmad Sentosa and Waluyo along with other KPK officials.

Gus Dur explained his coming to meet them was part of his support for the commission. He urged all KPK personnel to keep working hard to eradicate corruption in Indonesia.

The former president also told them not to be discouraged or demoralized by the arrest of several KPK leaders. People support Bibit and Chandra , he said.

About the police`s reason for arresting Bibit and Chandra, Gus Dur said it was very confusing because the formal indictment had suddenly changed from bribery to misuse of authority.

Therefore, Gus Dur urged the KPK and people to question Bibid and Chandra`s arrest.

On Oct 29, police detained Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra Hamzah who had previously been named suspects for alleged abuse of authority with regard to the issuance of a travel ban on businessman Anggoro Widjojo and also the issuance of a travel ban and later its revocation for businessman Djoko Tjandra.

The arrest has drawn mixed reactions. Many saw the case as the result of a rivalry between the KPK and Police. Earlier, over the investigation of its deputies, the KPK accused the National Police`s chief detective, Commissioner General Susno Duaji, of carrying out nonprocedural examinations, and the police had thus acted against the two KPK vice chairmen on trumped-up charges.
