Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada when making a courtesy call on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, expressed his government’s commitment to increase and expansion investment in Indonesia.
This was disclosed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda at the Presidential Office in Jakarta Tuesday night after accompanying the head of state.
"There had been a decline in Japanese investment in Indonesia this year, apparently following an increase in interest of the Chinese," he said.
For this reason, Hassan said, did not reveal the Japanese government’s target of increasing investment in Indonesia. "Thus, the new Japanese government under Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama will continue increasing trade and investment between the two countries," he said.
The two countries will still continue talks on boosting the economic and trade relations between the two countries after trade between the two nations in 2008 reached 43 billion US dollars.
Earlier, Okada had a meeting with Hasan at his office in Jakarta, discussing efforts to increase the relations between the two countries on the basis of the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJ-EPA).
In addition, as members of G-20, the two countries were expected to hold consultations and establish regional cooperation in the G-20 forum, Hasan said.
Before going to Indonesia, Okada had first visited Afghanistan and Pakistan. In his meeting with Hassan, Okada hoped Indonesia and Jepang could seek a solution to achieve peace in Afghanistan, in reach world peace.
In his first visit to Indonesia, Okada was also scheduled to visit the victims of the 7.6-magnitude earthquake which struck West Sumatra on last September 30. During the visit, Okada will identify the relief aid his government could give to Indonesia, especially the sector of infrastructure, like school buildings and houses of prayer.(KOMPAS.com)
