Strong quake rocks Sumatra

A strong earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked Sumatra at 5.16 pm Western Indonesian Standard Time, an official of the Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

"The earthquake occurred at 5.16 pm with epicenter in West Sumatra," Esti of the BMKG said here on Wednesday evening.

She said that the epicenter of the earthquake was at 0.84 degrees south latitude, 99.65 degrees east longitude at a depth of 71 km below the see surface.

The location of the quake`s epicenter was also about 78 km north-west of Padang city, 99 km south-west of Bukit Tinggi or 106 km north-east of Mentawai Islands.
The quake`s tremors were felt in the provinces of Riau, North Sumatra and Bengkulu.(ANTARA News)
