Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is the main airport serving the greater Jakarta area. The airport is named after the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta. The airport is often called Cengkareng by the locals. Its IATA code, CGK is originated from the word Cengkareng. This airport was opened for public in 1985, replacing Kemayoran Airport in North Jakarta and Halim Perdanakusuma airport in East Jakarta. Kemayoran Airport was closed eversince. However, Halim Perdanakusuma is still currently in operation, sering mostly charter military flights.

In 1992, Terminal 2 was completed. Terminal 1 serves all domestic airlines (Except for flights operated by Garuda Indonesia and Merpati Nusantara Airlines. These two airlines are located in the Terminal 2) while Terminal 2 serves all International flights.
